Wakefield Road Recreation Ground, located within the Dewsbury East Ward of Kirklees, underwent a significant programme of improvements following the successful securing of funding by Kirklees Council. Developed in consultation with local councillors and the wider community, the project aimed to create a more accessible, inclusive, and attractive recreational space that would cater to a broad range of users, from young children and families to teenagers and adults seeking opportunities for outdoor exercise.
A key objective of the scheme was to improve safety and accessibility across the site. Steel railings were installed along the base of the steep embankments surrounding the recreation ground to prevent unauthorised access by motorbikes, helping to create a safer environment for visitors. In addition, two formal access points were constructed, incorporating new steps and handrails to improve pedestrian access to the site while reducing opportunities for vehicle intrusion. These improvements significantly enhanced connectivity and encouraged greater use of the park by local residents.
The play area received a comprehensive upgrade, including the refurbishment of existing equipment and the installation of a range of new play features designed to appeal to different age groups and abilities. Within the fenced play area, a new bonded rubber mulch safety surface was installed to improve accessibility and safety. New equipment included toddler swings, a toddler play unit, a see-saw, and additional seating, creating a welcoming environment for younger children and their families.
Outside the fenced area, further recreational opportunities were provided through the installation of a grass-mat safety surface and a variety of equipment aimed at older children and teenagers. These facilities included a three-bay swing with an inclusive seat, a teen play unit, and a range of outdoor fitness equipment such as dip bars, chin-up bars, and climbing ladders. The inclusion of gym-style equipment within public parks is increasingly recognised as an important way of encouraging physical activity, improving health and wellbeing, and providing free access to exercise opportunities within local communities. Such facilities allow users to develop strength, balance, coordination, and overall fitness while enjoying the benefits of outdoor recreation.
To further enhance the environment, tree planting was incorporated throughout the site, providing seasonal colour, visual interest, and ecological benefits. The new planting helps create a more attractive landscape while supporting biodiversity and improving the overall visitor experience.
The completed scheme has successfully transformed Wakefield Road Recreation Ground into a safer, more accessible, and more inclusive community asset, providing high-quality play, fitness, and recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.
