Rossendale Borough Council and Community Interest Company Proffitts – Investing in Communities collaborated to deliver a significant enhancement project at the play area within Moller Ring, Crawshawbooth. The scheme was designed to create an engaging and inclusive outdoor environment that encourages children to connect with nature through imaginative and adventurous play while complementing the surrounding landscape.
A key objective of the project was to introduce a variety of natural play features that promote exploration, physical activity, and creative interaction with the environment. The completed play space combines traditional timber equipment, including a climbing frame and swings, with a range of natural play elements such as earth mounds, tunnels, timber bridges, and a trim trail featuring balance beams and monkey bars. These features were carefully selected to encourage children to test their coordination, balance, and confidence while enjoying a more natural and less structured play experience.
The use of timber play equipment and landscape-based features creates a play environment that blends seamlessly into the surrounding green space. Earth shaping and natural materials help stimulate imaginative play and provide opportunities for children to engage with varied terrain, offering a richer sensory experience than conventional playgrounds. The project also included extensive wildflower planting and tree works, enhancing biodiversity and creating an attractive setting that changes with the seasons while supporting local wildlife and pollinators.
The construction phase presented several challenges due to the site’s ground conditions. Periods of wet weather and naturally poor drainage resulted in muddy and saturated working areas, requiring careful planning and management throughout the works. Ground protection measures were implemented to minimise disturbance to surrounding areas, while drainage improvements formed a critical part of the scheme to help manage surface water and improve the long-term usability of the play space. New safety surfacing and upgraded entrance routes were also installed to ensure safe access for visitors throughout the year, particularly during wetter months.
The completed facility has transformed the play area into a colourful, welcoming, and nature-focused destination for local families. The involvement of children from Crawshawbooth Primary School in the planting activities further strengthened the community’s connection to the project, creating a sense of ownership and pride. The result is a vibrant outdoor space that successfully combines natural play, environmental enhancement, and improved accessibility for future generations to enjoy.
