Derian House Children’s Hospice, located in Chorley, commissioned the creation of a dedicated memorial garden to the rear of the main hospice building. The project aimed to provide a peaceful, reflective, and accessible outdoor space where families, visitors, and staff could spend time in a calm and supportive environment. Given the sensitive nature of the site, particular care and consideration were required throughout all stages of the works.

The existing garden contained several areas where the ashes of children had been interred, making it essential that all activities were planned and executed with the utmost respect. Extensive consultation and careful site management ensured that the integrity of these areas was maintained throughout the construction process. A considerate approach was adopted by the project team, with works carried out in a manner that minimised disruption to the daily operation of the hospice and the families who use its facilities.

The landscaping works commenced with the careful removal of existing shrubs, which were potted and stored on site for subsequent replanting and incorporation into the completed garden design. Existing retaining walls and fencing were dismantled before excavation works were undertaken to achieve the required formation levels. New concrete foundations and bases were installed to support the garden’s structural elements, together with a new drainage outfall to ensure effective surface water management.

The construction phase included the installation of concrete block walls, followed by rendering and painting to provide an attractive and durable finish. High-quality stone surfacing was laid throughout the garden to create accessible pathways and gathering areas, enhancing both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the space. Electrical connections were incorporated to support lighting and other features designed to improve the usability of the garden throughout the year.

The final phase of the project included reinstatement works, soft landscaping enhancements, and the installation of canopies and seating areas. These elements combined to create a welcoming and tranquil environment that offers comfort, reflection, and remembrance for families and visitors.

The completed memorial garden successfully delivered a respectful and thoughtfully designed outdoor space, providing a lasting legacy that complements the hospice’s invaluable work while offering a peaceful setting for remembrance and quiet contemplation.
